ALLIED SUPPORT

No newspaper can afford to employ enough journalists to meet all of its need for worldwide news and picture gathering, so the industry has always relied on national and international agencies. Many of the Mirror’s big overseas stories in the early twentieth century – such as the sinking of Titanic and the outbreak of the First World War – arrived as Reuters telegrams.

In 1903 a ticker machine like this was used to transmit Reuters news to the Mirror office. As a backup, a hard copy of the report was carried to the newspaper office by a uniformed messenger boy or girl.

THE ROBOT REVOLUTION

Computers transformed the Mirror newsroom during the 1980s under Robert Maxwell’s ownership. By this time the paper was already experimenting with this portable ‘lap-top’ machine to allow provincial reporters to transmit their copy directly to the newsroom. Previously, reporters had to phone in their story to be typed up by colleagues called copytakers.

STAR RATING

The 3am Girls – the Mirror’s showbiz reporters – are nearly as famous as the celebrities they interview.

Eva Simpson wore this designer dress for a photograph when the 3am girls were nominated by the magazine FHM in the ‘most popular female’ category in their annual awards.
