STR profiling

Like DNA fingerprinting, DNA STR profiling is a way of looking at particular repeated phrases of DNA, scattered through the chromosomes. STR stands for 'short tandem repeats', the exact number of which varies from person to person. You will have your own combination of STRs, inherited from your parents. STR profiling is replacing DNA fingerprinting as it is quicker and more automated leaving less room for human error. Also, it needs only tiny quantities of DNA, such as a few hair roots left at a crime scene.
