Genes and families

Some family features are easy to spot - perhaps you have your mum's eyes, or your grandad's nose. Inherited traits like these do not always appear in a straightforward way: they may seem to skip a generation, or affect only the men in a family. Common illnesses like heart disease, asthma and diabetes are all partly influenced by genes and can sometimes run in families too. Some people inherit genetic conditions, which may affect their appearance, health or quality of life.
