What causes heart disease?
Heart disease has many causes. A high level of cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of heart disease. So do smoking and high levels of substances that usually help the blood to clot. Some people are more prone to heart disease than others because of their genetic make-up. But even if you have a family history of heart problems, you can greatly reduce your risk by not smoking, exercising regularly and cutting down on the amount of animal fat and alcohol in your diet.
