Genetic conditions

There are over 5000 different known genetic conditions, which affect over two million people in the UK. Genetic conditions are caused by changes in genes that affect the way the body works or looks. Many, like sickle-cell disease and cystic fibrosis, show symptoms from childhood. But in others, such as Huntington disease, the symptoms do not appear until middle age. Scientists have identified the genes involved in many genetic conditions.
