Life Story of Spitfire PK664
The Spitfire on display was built in Supermarine's South Marston factory in Wiltshire and first flown on 17 November 1945. As the war was now over, it was placed in store.
In May 1949 it was issued to 615 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, Kent, and took part in the annual air gunnery practice in Sylt, northern Germany. It was damaged while taxiing out for an air-firing sortie when the pilot was distracted by an overheating engine and hit a ground sign. After being repaired it was soon returned to storage because new jet fighters were replacing Spitfires in the RAF.
