The mastermind at Supermarine
Reginald Joseph Mitchell was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1895. At school, he had a flair for art and mathematics, but his first love was engineering. He joined Supermarine in 1917 and two years later became their Chief Designer. During his time there, he designed no fewer than 24 different aircraft, including the Spitfire.
