The two brothers Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier gave their first public demonstration of a model hot air balloon in Annonay, France. About 36 feet in diameter, and made of linen and paper, it rose to a height of 6,000 feet and floated for ten minutes, travelling a distance of over one mile. That year, the Montgolfiers built a balloon that carried the first living passengers aloft, and in November a balloon that carried the first human passengers.
