The fire is made up of six clay bars around each of which is wound a nickel-chrome wire element. This model also has a blue-enamelled iron cast, with a hinged trivet to support a kettle or pan. Electric fires had been available since about 1894 but were significantly improved by the invention of an alloy of nickel and chrome, which could withstand great heat.
