Hofmann's apparatus, 1860s.

Used to demonstrate that the volumes of oxygen that enter into the composition of carbon and sulphur dioxide are equal to the respective volumes of these compound gases, this is a U tube with a deflagrating spoon on a stand. August Wilhelm von Hofmann (1818-1892) was one of the major organic chemists and most influential teachers of the nineteenth century.
