Working model (scale 1:2) of a machine for making candles, made by Price's Patent Candle Company Ltd, Battersea, London. In 1842 and 1845, multi-candle mechanisms were made by Tuck and Palmer, followed in 1855 by a process patented by two Americans, Stainthorp and Humiston, which resulted in machines such as the one shown here. In the foreground is an 18th century iron pan for pouring hot wax and a sheet iron candle mould for making four candles at a time.
