Wooden statue of St Cornelius, probably French, 17th century.

The Catholic Church dominated medieval Europe, and Christian teaching often implied that illness was the result of sin. Prayer therefore became an important part of healing. St Cornelius, who lived during the 3rd century AD, was often invoked against earache, epilepsy and fevers.
