Wooden statue of St Cosmas, probably French, 19th century.

St Cosmas and his twin brother St Damian are the patron saints of physicians. They were physicians who would not accept payment for treatment, an act of charity which converted many people to Christinaity. The brothers are often represented performing a miraculous replacement of a Christian's missing leg with one from a dead Moor. Cosmas is also commonly represented holding a phial of ointment.
