Glass retort, Italian, 1650-1800.

A hand-blown pale green glass retort with a long neck and projecting stopper hole. Retorts were used to distill liquid. Distillation is achieved by purifying a liquid by heating it so that it vaporises, then cooling and condensing the vapour and collecting the resulting liquid.
