Liquid-cooled suit, c 1955
Image number: 10324742

Suit developed by researchers at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough, Hampshire, for troops and pilots working in hot conditions. A pump, roughly the size of a two pence coin, circulates cold water round a network of knitted nylon, threaded through with 40 plastic pipes each as thick as a human artery. The suit is slim enough to wear under partial-pressure suits and other protective clothing.
