Morton's seed drill
One way of spreading seed was to use a seed drill like this. You held it on one arm and sawed a bow-like handle backwards and forwards with the other. This turned a small fan underneath, throwing a trickle of seeds out across the furrows as you walked along. This broadcasting method gave more even coverage of seed than spreading by hand.
