'Baby Blue' - a prototype polymerase chain reaction (PCR), c 1986.
The PCR machine automates the process of making large quantities of DNA from a tiny starting sample. Automation is central to huge research enterprises such as the Human Genome Project, which sequenced the 35,000 genes in human cells. This model, 'Baby Blue', was the first in which the software cycling controller was integrated with the thermal cycling block in a single instrument.
