Map of the cosmic microwave background radiation, c. 2006

This beach ball shows a full-sky map of the microwave radiation left over from the Big Bang—a snapshot of what the early Universe was like, 13.7 billion years ago. Many scientists believe that temperature fluctuations observed in the microwave background are a result of Hawking radiation. This map is the best proof of Hawking’s theories about black holes and the origins of the Universe.
