Separating Sand

Separating Sand

A mixture of liquid and sand is sandwiched between two sheets of glass - turn it upside down to stir up the sand, then watch closely as it begins to settle. The sand is a mixture of different-sized and different-coloured grains, which seem to sort themselves as they fall to the bottom.

Layers of different sands begin to build up, creating beautiful patterns. When the sand has settled, spin the exhibit to start all over again.
