Turbine engines fitted to 'Turbinia', c.1894

Radial flow turbine engines originally fitted to the "Turbinia" in 1894 and removed in 1896 (partly sectioned). The 'Turbinia', built in 1894, was the world's first steam turbine driven vessel. Sir Charles Parsons (1854- 1931) invented the steam turbine, developing it for marine use. He used radial flow, where steam is introduced near the shaft and made to flow radially outwards before being conducted back inwards towards the shaft.
