Titanium aluminide ingot
This is an ingot of the intermetallic material titanium aluminide. One of the aims of the microgravity experiments is to study how this material behaves when it melts and then solidifies. Scientists use these data to develop computer models to describe the best technique for casting titanium aluminide into turbine blades, resulting in lighter and more energy-efficient blades.
