Sony Walkman, c 1980.

Sony Walkman with headphones, c 1980.
Sony 'Stowaway' stereo cassette-recorder, 1980, model TCS-300. This was one of the earliest cassette players intended to be used while on the move. The small size was made possible by omitting a loudspeaker, listening being via headphones. The equipment was robust enough to be used while out walking or jogging. In 1979 Sony had introduced a similar but slightly smaller machine without a recording facility which they marketed as the 'Walkman', and this quickly became the generic name for all such cassette players.
