The uncanny is a frightening feeling of disruption and strangeness. It derives from the re-emergence into consciousness of something that has been repressed, lending a peculiar lack of stability to perception of objects in the world which are invested with this ‘uncanny’ feeling. Freud writes that the uncanny is experienced ‘when the distinction between imagination and reality is effaced, as when something that we have hitherto regarded as imaginary appears before us in reality, or when a symbol takes over the full functions of the things it symbolises’.
