Anatomical model of a horse, c. 1850-1880.
This beautiful half-scale anatomical model of a horse is the work of Louis Thomas Jerôme Auzoux (1797-1880), a French physician who popularised the use of papier-mâché teaching models in the 19th century. He produced his first model in 1822 and five years later he opened a factory that manufactured human, veterinary and botanical models. These were sold throughout the world and Auzoux became a household name.
In time, his models were superseded by those made of plaster or plastic, but his reputation remains and examples of his work are highly sought after.
