Military veterinary medicine chest, 1910-18
Horses played hugely important roles for both sides of the conflict during the First World War. Hundreds of thousands were used to carry both men and supplies and they were exposed to extreme dangers and hardship. This medicine chest – painted camouflage green and inscribed 'horse-doctor's chest' – was produced in Berlin for use by German forces on the Western Front. It was discovered among abandoned supplies found by the advancing Allies in 1918.
