Taste and smell
You use taste and smell to detect certain chemicals in the environment. These senses are closely linked. Taste and smell are less well developed in humans than in some other animals but they are still important - for example, to help us avoid eating contaminated food. Information about taste and smell is sent to a number of areas in the brain including the limbic system which deals with emotional reactions, and the hypothalamus which co-ordinates behaviour like salivation, as well as several parts of the cortex.
