A new way of marketing goods

As an ambitious businessman, Matthew Boulton recognised the importance of advertising his wares.

He did this by allowing visitors into the Soho Manufactory. Boulton also worked with the potter Josiah Wedgwood, who ran a saleroom in London.

Eventually the Soho Manufactory stopped receiving visitors, to prevent piracy of its designs and the theft of precious materials. However, Boulton was one of a growing number of industrialists who realised marketing was crucial to successful mass production.
