In 1600 there were 4 million acres of woodland in Britain. In 2002 there were only 2.75 million acres.

Coal - a new energy source

Until the 1500s the main fuel, and the most important industrial material, was wood. It was used for producing metals, constructing buildings and ships, and many other purposes. But building a large wooden warship consumed 2000 mature trees. Wood was being used quicker than new forests could be planted.
