Studying human disease genes
Scientists hope to identify all of our 24,000 genes by 2003. Afterwards, they will face the huge task of finding out what all these genes do. One way to study the effect of a human gene is to insert it into an animal or remove a similar gene from an animal. These transgenic animals may help us understand and treat common diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
