Winning for Britain
From 1923 Mitchell and the Supermarine company began experimenting with increasingly streamlined and more powerful racing aircraft to compete for the international Schneider Trophy for seaplanes.
Billed at the time as 'The World's Fastest Air Race', the Schneider Trophy was awarded in perpetuity to Britain in 1931 after three successive wins with Supermarine racers. The winning aircraft, the Supermarine S.6B, was designed by Mitchell and his team. The winning floatplane and the Schneider Trophy itself are on display in the museum's Flight gallery.
