Flt Sgt George 'Grumpy' Unwin
George Unwin joined the RAF as an Administrative Apprentice in 1929. His potential was quickly spotted and he was selected for pilot training, proceeding to 19 Squadron as a flight sergeant. He became one of the first pilots to fly the brand-new Spitfire in 1938. Unwin loved the aircraft for its excellent performance: 'After a few flights it was obvious that this was a special plane, much better than anything we'd flown before'.
