The importance of the ground crew
It took just one man to fly a Spitfire, but many more to keep it in the air. Without the efforts of the specialist technicians in the ground crews, the Spitfire could never have remained operational. They did not enjoy the glamorous reputation of the pilots, but they were no less dedicated and took great pride in their work. It was thanks to the foresight of the RAF in the mid-1930s that a small army of these technicians was ready for service by the time the war began.
