Science and Technology Facilities Council
The Science and Technology Facilities Council is the funder and custodian of UK particle physics, and manager of our national membership of CERN. One of seven publicly-funded Research Councils, STFC’s goal is to maximise the societal, scientific, economic and international benefits to the UK of our research.
We are therefore proud to support the Collider exhibition, which builds on the work of the past decade by our staff, the UK particle physics community and CERN to bring the wonder and excitement of the Large Hadron Collider to the general public. This work has helped inspire a new generation of students, with pleasing results: significant increases in applications to physics degree courses, despite the progressive decline in overall undergraduate enrolment in recent years, and heightened public interest in the Big Questions addressed by our sciences, and by particle physics in particular.
Winton Capital Management
Winton Capital Management is a world leader in empirical scientific research into financial markets. Based in London, Oxford, Hong Kong and Zurich we currently employ over 120 scientists, including particle physicists, astrophysicists and computer engineers, who search masses of data looking for patterns in the noise. Like the scientists at CERN we have learned in our own small way how collaboration is essential to scientific discovery in this age of Big Data.
Winton are delighted to sponsor Collider and to give thousands of people the opportunity to step inside one of the greatest scientific achievements of our time.
The Embassy of Switzerland in the United Kingdom
Switzerland, founder member and host country of CERN and major contributor to the LHC project, is proud to be associated with the Collider exhibition. Swiss scientists, engineers and high-tech industry have played an important part in the design and construction of the Collider where our universities and research institutes are involved in the search for the Higgs particle and other LHC experiments.
Switzerland is renowned for excellence and innovation across science and industry, attracting top talent from around the world. Clusters of leading high-tech companies around CERN and all across the country also contribute to an innovative and dynamic business environment. This provides overseas investors with great opportunities for branching out into Switzerland. For all these reasons, we are delighted to support both the Collider with its international community of researchers, and this exhibition at the Science Museum which brings the greatest experiment on earth to life.
