What is included in a Science Museum Birthday Party?
Hopefully we’ve thought of everything you need to make your party a success.
A weekday evening Wonderlab Party includes an ice cream sundae for every child followed by a Wonderlab Science Show, and ending with priority access to Wonderlab, guided by one of our Explainers. Each child will also get a Party Bag to take home with them.
A weekend Wonderlab Party includes priority access to Wonderlab and a Wonderlab Science Show, followed by a kids’ meal in our Deep Blue Restaurant and finishing off with birthday cake. Each child will also get a Museum Handbook, or for younger children a sticker book, and a Party Bag to take home with them. As a special gift for the birthday child we’ll also included a Wonderlab Annual Family Pass – so your family can come back to Wonderlab as many times as you want.
Big Screen Birthdays include tickets to see an IMAX 3D film, popcorn and a drink for every child and a party bag and Handbook for the children to take home with them.
What time do I need to arrive?
Weekday evening Wonderlab Parties start at 16.00. You’ll need to make your way up to the Wonderlab picnic area, on level 3, by this time where one of our Explainers will be on hand to meet you.
Weekend Wonderlab Parties start at 10.15, 11.45, 13.15 and 14.45. You’ll need to make your way to the Museum’s Info Desk next to the main exit by this time, to meet your host who will take you to Wonderlab.
Big Screen Birthdays start at 10.55, 12.10, 13.20, 14.40 and 15.50. You’ll need to make your way to the IMAX Ticket Desk, at the rear of the Museum, by this time.
What are the food choices?
At the weekday evening Wonderlab parties, each child will be given an ice cream sundae on arrival. These come in three flavours: Rocky Road (one scoop of chocolate ice cream, topped with marshmallow and biscuit crumb), Sweet Strawberry (one scoop of strawberry ice cream, topped with rainbow sprinkles and marshmallow), and Very Vanilla (one scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with caramel sauce and mini Oreo).
At weekend Wonderlab Parties the children can choose between tomato penne pasta, a burger with fries or homemade fish fingers and fries, followed by a jelly pot or rice crispy cake, with juice, milk or water to drink.
At Big Screen Birthdays each child will be given popcorn and a drink, but if you’re still hungry after the film then you can make your way to our Deep Blue Diner where you can purchase a range of hot meals.
If any of your party have allergies, intolerances or specific dietary requirements we can tailor the catering options to suit your needs, just let us know.
When booking your party please confirm the catering choices for your group. You can change your preferences later as long as we have the final numbers, and details of any dietary needs, a week before your party.
Unfortunately catering for adults is not included in the cost of the parties. For the weekday evening parties you can purchase ice cream, sundaes and milkshakes from the Shake Bar next to the Wonderlab picnic area. With the weekend parties you’re welcome to book and pay for adult meals in advance, the latest menu can be found on the food and drink page of the website. Alternatively, this can be done on the day—however, if you choose to do this, we cannot guarantee that your food will arrive at the same time as the children’s. For Big Screen Birthdays adults will need to purchase their own refreshments on the day.
How do I access the party invitations?
The template for the party invitations will be sent out with your booking confirmation.
What is included in the Party Bag?
The party bag includes a notepad, bouncy ball, a Science Museum lollipop, highlighter and Pen. Contents may vary from time to time but they will always be equally exciting and of the same value.
How many children can I invite?
All Science Museum Birthday Parties are designed for between 10 and 25 children. We ask that you tell us the number of children you expect to attend at the time of booking, however you can add extra places (up to a maximum of 20) up to a week before the party.
Please note that weekend Wonderlab Parties booked for the 10.15 and 11.45 time slots have a maximum capacity of 15 children.
What if I need to cancel the Party? Can I get a refund?
We hope you don’t need to cancel your party but understand that sometimes this may be necessary. If you do decide to cancel your event we can offer a full refund as long as the cancellation is made more than five working days in advance of the date of the party, less a cancellation fee of £50 to cover our costs. If you cancel less than five working days before the party unfortunately we cannot offer you a refund. We are also unable to provide refunds for guests who do not attend on the day.
Please read the terms and conditions in full before booking.
Do Museum staff look after the children?
While we’re happy to help you where we can we aren’t able to supervise the children during the party and they will remain your responsibility throughout. We therefore require that your party has one adult for every eight children. The cost of the party includes two adult tickets to Wonderlab/IMAX film for parties of 10-16 children, three for those of 17-20 and four for groups of 20+. However, if you would like to include more adults in your party, entry to Wonderlab will be charged at the standard day rate of £8 and IMAX tickets at £11 per person.
Can I have candles on the cake?
Unfortunately candles are not allowed in the Science Museum as the Museum’s Fire Safety Regulations prohibit naked flames. We’re happy for you to bring LED candles as an alternative and your host can arrange for them to be put on the cake for you.
Can I visit other galleries while at the Museum?
If you’ve booked the weekday evening Wonderlab Party it is unlikely you will have a chance to explore the rest of the museum during your visit as we close at 18.00. However, if you want to arrive early or come back another day we’ll be happy to give you some recommendations for things to see.
If you’ve booked the weekend Wonderlab Party or Big Screen Birthday you’re free to explore the rest of the museum once you’re finished. Each child will be given a Museum Handbook to help you decide what to go and see, whether your child loves space, aeroplanes or computers, there’s something for everyone.
Please note that the museum opening hours are 10.00–18.00, so if you’re booking the 14.45 weekend Wonderlab Party slot or the 15.50 Big Screen Birthday slot, you may want to arrive early to explore the museum before meeting your party.
Are there any other activities I can book to make the birthday party extra special?
For weekend Wonderlab Parties if you would like to include extra activities for your party to enjoy we recommend adding a 3D IMAX film, a Legend of Apollo experience or Red Arrows 3D simulator screening to your booking. You can also purchase Science Museum t-shirts for each child as a reminder of the day for any of the Science Museum Birthday Parties
