The pursuit of scientific knowledge cannot be confined to the comfort of a laboratory. Many scientists work in dangerous and extreme conditions to increase our knowledge of the world around us.
The Geophysics and Oceanography gallery is where you will discover just how far they’ll go in search of this knowledge.
Some have travelled to the frozen wastes of Antarctica, while others have ventured to the furthest depths of the oceans. Now you can learn more about some of these bold voyages and discover the many ingenious instruments which scientists have devised to investigate the physical conditions in some of the remotest places on Earth.
You’ll also discover how scientists first measured gravity, how they learned to 'see' underground in order to find new oil, gas and mineral deposits and how teams of scientists systematically study the chemistry, physics, geology and biology of the sea.
You can even find out all about the voyage of HMS Challenger, which in the 1870s laid the foundations of modern oceanography.
