Inside the Spitfire, our current exhibition in the Ingenious series, takes a new look at an old and treasured favourite. On one side of the gallery you’ll find a real 'deconstructed' Spitfire, stripped down to its original aluminium structure to reveal a new perspective on its design and construction.

On the opposite side of the gallery we dig into the personal stories behind this iconic aircraft. Here you’ll find not just the famous pilots, but also the designers, production workers and ground crew, as well as ‘the Nation’ – ordinary people who clubbed together to buy Spitfires for the RAF in the dark days of World War Two.

In addition, the gallery contains many personal mementoes and relics as well as unique photographs and highly evocative film from the time.
