Oscar-winners Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy in conversation with Sanjeev Bhaskar
The Illuminating India events programme explores not only Indian science, technology and innovation, but also celebrates Indian art and culture. We kick off the season with a very special screening of a film whose production was a shining example of UK-India collaboration.
Winner of eight Academy Awards and based on the novel by Vikas Swarup, Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of Jamal (Dev Patel), a penniless 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai just one question away from winning 20 million rupees on India’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire? But when the show breaks for the night, suddenly, he is arrested on suspicion of cheating. After all, how could an uneducated street kid possibly know so much?
Determined to get to the bottom of Jamal’s story, the jaded police inspector (played by Irrfan Khan) spends the night probing Jamal’s incredible past, from his riveting tales of the slums where he and his brother Salim survived by their wits to his hair-raising encounters with local gangs and his heartbreak over Latika (Freida Pinto), the unforgettable girl he loved and lost.
We are delighted to be joined on the night by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Steve Jobs) and fellow Academy Award-winner, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) for a Q&A hosted by Sanjeev Bhaskar (Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars at No. 42) about the making of the film.
