Do we need to study lots of people’s genomes?
The Human Genome Project created a mosaic of all human genes using information gathered from just a few people. As DNA sequencing technologies get faster, cheaper and more efficient, scientists are collecting genetic information from many more individuals. This will allow them to identify differences in the DNA sequence that have an impact on human health. Research projects such as the 1000 Genomes Project are pushing forward this technology, increasing the speed and reducing the cost. In the future every person may have his or her own genome sequenced.
