Technicians: The David Sainsbury Gallery–groups

Step into a fascinating world of STEM careers for a peek behind the scenes in our brand new interactive gallery. Recommended for KS3 and upwards (ages 11+).

Experience what it’s like to create visual effects on a blockbuster film set, analyse blood samples in a medical laboratory, operate a robot in a manufacturer's workshop, fix a fault atop a wind turbine and much more.

Recreating the workplaces of technicians across multiple sectors – health science, creative arts, manufacturing and renewable energy – your group will get hands-on with interactive exhibits that simulate job-related tasks. We’ve collaborated with Marvel Studios, the NHS, National Grid, the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and many others to create this gallery.

School groups can also book onto our free, Meet an Employee workshop run by a technician, where they will take part in a hands on activity and Q&A session.

Visitors will get to create lifesaving drugs and experience what it's like to be a pharmacy technician who makes bespoke drugs for patients in NHS hospitals.

Step onto a reconstructed film set of Shuri’s Lab from Marvel Studios’ Black Panther and re-enact the role technicians play in creating blockbuster movies.

Take on the role of a wind turbine maintenance technician and pilot a remotely operated vehicle on the ocean floor.

And operate a robotic arm and test innovative designs using a computer-aided design inspired by the work of advanced manufacturing technicians.

The gallery will support productive careers conversations with young people by offering an informal yet educational encounter with a huge range of technical career paths.

A visit could support in meeting Gatsby’s Good Career Guidance benchmarks by providing opportunities to experience workplace environments and encounter employers and employees.
