Frankenstein Festival

“Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live?”
—Frankenstein’s Creature

This extra special festival celebrated the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus.

Through immersive theatrical events, hands-on activities and experimental storytelling, we explored the ethical, scientific and technical questions surrounding whether or not we should create ‘life’.

Events

Humanity 2.0

This futuristic play, created and performed by Emily Carding, took you into a world where humankind is extinct.

Mystery in Frankenstein’s lab

This unique interactive theatrical experience asked you to solve puzzles, conduct experiments and create your own creature.

It's alive! Immersive audio tour

A guided audio tour explored the museum as never before, plunging visitors ears-first into an augmented acoustic reality.

Pandemic: A choose-your-own adventure film

A viral pandemic is sweeping the world. Dr. Victor is an ambitious, young scientist who thinks she can help, but how far should she go? You decide. This interactive film put you in control of a psychological thriller.

Artificial life: Could we, should we, will we?

This panel discussion with Murray Shanahan, Susan Stepney, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Ben Russell and Jo Marchant examined the probability and ethics of creating truly artificial life.

Drop-in sessions

Other events throughout the festival included the chance to direct your own stop-motion film in a Create Your Own Creature workshop, Meet Mary Shelley with our costumed character, and a Cabinet of Curiosities featuring objects from our collections.

You could also meet Robin the Robot, a robot which helps young children with diabetes understand their symptoms, explore ethical issues in science, and meet some marvellous makers who have created monstrous life forms.
