The Man in the White Suit (U) + Q&A

Science, commerce and fast fashion collide in Alexander Mackendrick’s 1951 Ealing comedy classic.

Humble but eccentric inventor Sidney Stratton (Alec Guinness) creates a fantastic, unstainable, unbreakable fabric. It never gets dirty and will never wear out—a huge breakthrough for the textiles industry, one might think.

However, the established garment manufacturers don’t see it that way. Once they realise that this wonder material could be the death of their industry, the clothing factory bigwigs resort to desperate measures to suppress Sidney’s invention.

The screening is followed by a Q&A chaired by The Art of Innovation curator Rachel Boon with the following speakers:

  • Amber Butchart – fashion historian, broadcaster, author and presenter of BBC Four’s A Stitch in Time.
  • Mark DuguidBFI senior curator
  • Mark Miodownikmaterials scientist, broadcaster and Royal Society book prize winner
