Professor Lucie Green: The Science of Sunshine

Ahead of the screening of Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, join solar physicist Lucie Green to find out how the sun works and how we might restart a dying star.

In Sunshine, a crew of scientists must travel to the sun with a device that they believe will bring new life to our star. It’s truly one of the great cinematic celebrations of the sun. Ahead of our screening of the film (followed by a Q&A with Danny Boyle, Professor Brian Cox and Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock), this talk will take a deep dive into the science of our nearest star.

Professor Lucie Green’s acclaimed book 15 Million Degrees: A Journey to Centre of the Sun reveals the latest in solar research and explains how a solar storm could threaten everything we know. Joined here in conversation by science journalist and broadcaster Deborah Cohen, she will shed light on the findings of her research and the science involved in creating Sunshine

Speakers include:

  • Professor Lucie Green—Science communicator, solar physicist, author of 15 million Degrees: A Journey to the Centre of the Sun and Professor of Physics at the Dept of Space & Climate Physics, University College London.
  • Deborah Cohen (Chair)—Science journalist and broadcaster; previously Science Editor at ITV News, Health Correspondent for BBC’s Newsnight and Investigations Editor for the British Medical Journal.
