Sustainable Curating: Call for papers

In light of current events, the conference has been postponed. If you have a question about the event please email research@sciencemuseum.ac.uk.

How can curators work in environmentally sustainable ways at this time of ecological crisis? How might we reflect on sustainable curatorial practices and how can we address sustainability through exhibitions and displays?

This one-day workshop will explore the theory and practice of sustainable curating in the museum and heritage sectors.

We invite curators, museum professionals, academics and artists to submit proposals for contributions on various aspects of curating, which we conceive broadly to include gallery development, exhibition display, interventions, collections management, development and engagement, and research.

Topics might include:

  • Developing content for galleries and exhibitions on sustainability topics
  • Curating galleries and exhibitions in sustainable ways
  • The carbon footprint of collecting, lending and storing objects
  • The challenges and opportunities of sustainable curating
  • Reflections on the concept of ‘sustainability’ in relation to curation
  • Collaborating with environmental groups and activists

How to submit your proposal

Please send an abstract of no more than 200 words and a biography of no more than 150 words to research@sciencemuseum.ac.uk.  You will need to specify whether you wish to contribute a 10 or 20 minute presentation or an alternative format.

Proposals must be submitted by 17.00 on Thursday 12 March 2020.
