When Worlds Collide: How Modern Technology Reveals the Ancient Past 

Modern day technology is rapidly evolving, while our fascination with the past is ever-increasing. But how is today’s technology shedding new light on our ancient history and allowing us to step back in time? 

From uncovering lost shipwrecks through sonar and submersibles to recreating ancient architecture through immersive and cutting-edge video gaming, new technologies are allowing us to walk in the footsteps of ancient civilisations like never before. 

Join our experts for captivating live audio-visual presentations on stage and screen to show how long-hidden ancient Greek worlds can be reimagined and brought to life using techniques such as state of the art 3D scanning, laser technology and much more. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session to explain the significance of these technologies.  

  • Professor Alice Roberts—Anatomist and biological anthropologist, broadcaster, Professor of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Birmingham and author of Ancestors: A Prehistory of Britain in Seven Burials 

  • Dr Helen Farr—Associate Professor of Maritime Archaeology at University of Southampton, Co-chair of UNESCO UNITWIN Network on Underwater Archaeology and Co-investigator on the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project.  

  • Professor Michael Scott—Professor in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick, Author, broadcaster and presenter of BBC’s Ancient Invisible Cities  

  • Ubisoft—We will be joined by live video link by a member of the development team who worked on the blockbuster video game Assassin’s Creed set in Ancient Greece; Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and its interactive educational version, Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece. 

  • Ortis Deley (Chair)—TV presenter and broadcaster, best known for co-hosting C5's The Gadget Show.
