How will batteries power our future?
In 2019, three chemists were awarded a Nobel Prize for inventing the lithium-ion battery. These batteries are already common in rechargeable devices such as mobile phones, but they could soon help make our world more sustainable. Renewable sources of energy like the sun and wind vary in supply. They may generate more or less power than we need. Batteries could store this energy when it is captured to ensure we always have enough available.
How can drones save lives?
In September 2019 a self-flying drone delivered insulin to an island off the west coast of Ireland. The drone flew from Connemara airport to the island of Inis Mór as part of the #DiabetesDrone project.
Severe weather can leave people living in remote areas isolated, unable to receive medical supplies. Drone networks would allow medicine to be reliably and swiftly transported.
