On 16 June 1963, 26 year-old Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to go into space.

Her mission was a major milestone in space exploration and to this day she remains the only woman to have made a solo space flight.

This special exhibition in the Exploring Space gallery uncovered her achievements and ongoing legacy, revealed through her personal artefacts, images and film.

It reflected on a life which has taken Tereshkova from humble origins as a factory worker who spent her spare time parachuting to her latter-day status as a cosmonaut, global ambassador and stateswoman.
